Foothardy Socks

Foothardy at the fireside or at the frostline, you can’t beat our wool socks from Adirondack Sheep.

Mountain men, lumberjacks, hunters, hikers, ice fishermen, skaters, skiers and snowmobilers all appreciate the virtues of 100% wool. Our socks are durable, comfortable, and warm. We leave some lanolin in the yarn as a natural water – repellent, but our 100% wool socks hold in body heat even if they are soaked.

Care and feeding: Gently wash in cool water, roll in towel to absorb excess water,

 then lie flat to dry.

Needles required: One set # 4, or #5 double pointed needles

Yarn : 5-6 oz. Upper Hudson Woolery Sock Yarn

Darning needle if you want to kitchener stitch toes.

Instructions are for a size 8-11 sock and are easily adaptable bigger or smaller.

Simply keep an even number of stitches on two needles and twice as many on the third.

Leg: Cast 40 stitches on one DPN. Divide the stitches on three needles , 10, 10, 20 stitches.

Join, being careful not to twist in between needles. Work in the round,  K1, P1 for  10 inches or the length desired for your leg.

Heel: Work back and forth on only the needle which holds 20 stitches. *K1, S1, K1, S1, repeat

across row. Purl back. Repeat these two rows for two inches ending with a knit row.

Turn Heel:   Purl 12, P2 tog, P1 turn work. Slip the first stitch, K5, K2 tog, K1. Turn.

Slip the first stitch, purl to within the 1rst stitch next to hole ( made by slipping stitch in your last row) , purl the two stitches on either side of this hole together, P1. Repeat this process, always slipping the first stitch, and knitting or purling 2 tog each side of the hole until all the stitches are used up. You will have 12 stitches left on your needle.

Gusset: Pick up and knit 10 stitches along the right side of the heel. Knit the next 20 stitches

(from 2 needles) on to one needle. With free needle, pick up and knit 10 stitches along the left side of the heel, and with this same needle knit 6 stitches from the next needle.

You now have 20 stitches on the front instep needle, and 16 stitches on each of the back needles. Knit one round. Next round and every other round  decrease one stitch at the front end of the back needles ( the ends nearest the  front instep needle) by knitting together the 2nd and 3rd stitches from the ends. Continue this decreasing until you are left with 10 stitches on each back needle.

Foot: Knit in the round until sock measures 2” less than desired length.

Toe:

Decrease Row 1: Knit together the 2nd and 3rd stitches from both ends of the front needle and

the front ends of the back needle.

Row 2 : Knit

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 8 stitches are left on the front needle and four on each back needle.

Slip four stitches from one back needle to the other back needle so that you have 8 stitches on two needles.

Graft, kitchener stitch, or sew together.  Wear with pride.
